ScreenTune changelog

What's new in ScreenTune.

August 2026

More ways to call out what matters 2.0.5

New

  • Shapes and focus tools: Add rounded rectangles, highlights, and a loupe from the new Shape picker to guide attention in screenshots.
  • Custom file names: Choose separate base names for screenshots and recordings in Settings. ScreenTune keeps the automatic date and time suffixes.

Improved

  • Intel Mac exports: Improved GIF and HEVC export stability and reduced stalls while preparing cursor graphics.
  • Playback in the background: Video previews now pause when ScreenTune becomes inactive, so playback and scrubbing do not continue behind another app.

Bring existing videos into ScreenTune 2.0.4

New

  • Video import: Open an existing video from Finder or drag it into ScreenTune, then continue in the same Editor used for recordings.
  • Copy and paste: Copy and paste annotations, Mosaic regions, and Blur regions with standard keyboard shortcuts or context menus.

Improved

  • Faster Editor handoff: The Editor now opens without waiting for the full Auto Zoom analysis. Initial zoom regions appear right away and are refined in the background.

Sharper frames and matching exports 2.0.3

New

  • Border styles: Frame your captures with Outline, Inset, Glass, or Matte borders, each with its own color and finish.
  • iPad mockups: Present captures in an iPad frame and choose portrait or landscape for supported mobile mockups.

Improved

  • Preview and export consistency: Borders, device frames, shadow silhouettes, and canvas spacing now match more closely across Screenshot Preview, PNG, JPEG, MP4, and GIF.
  • Device frame detail: Vector-based chrome and updated Apple device colors keep mockups sharp and consistent across export sizes.
  • Background colors: Custom colors now include the macOS eyedropper, and the selected gradient direction is preserved when opening Export.

Fixed

  • Window screenshot shadows: Native window shadows no longer crop unevenly when the system capture trims one side.
  • Stacked screenshot previews: The floating preview now shrinks cleanly after a card closes instead of leaving an invisible area over nearby apps.

A license for up to three Macs 2.0.2

New

  • 3-Mac license: A one-time license for up to three Macs is now available alongside the single-Mac option.

Text recognition controls stay available 2.0.1

Fixed

  • Screenshot text recognition: Copy Text in the floating preview and text selection in the editor no longer disappear after a scan finds no text or text recognition is temporarily unavailable. The editor now explains the state and keeps a retry action available.

Connected-device capture, smoother Auto Zoom, and safer recording 2.0.0

New

  • Connected-device capture: Take screenshots or record the screen and supported audio of a USB-connected iPhone or iPad, with device selection, a live preview, and Pause/Resume.
  • Device mockups: Present captures in MacBook, iPhone, Safari-style browser, or desktop frames, with device colors and matching preview and export results.
  • More screenshot tools: Add Ellipse, Line, and Blur alongside the existing annotation and mosaic tools.
  • Screenshot text selection: Recognize text in a screenshot, select the words you need, and copy them without leaving ScreenTune.
  • Mesh gradient backgrounds: New mesh gradients and content-aware recommendations make polished backgrounds easier to choose.

Improved

  • Smoother Auto Zoom: Auto Zoom now uses steadier spring-based framing, groups nearby interactions into fewer shots, keeps the cursor in view more reliably, and preserves smooth transitions after zoom edits, splits, trims, or crops. Auto-applied zooms can also be undone, cleared together, or re-analyzed without discarding manual regions.
  • Capture UI and menus: A clearer Shot/Record switch, more stable floating controls, recent projects, capture commands, screenshot history, and visible shortcut assignments make core actions easier to find.
  • Cleaner video and GIF exports: 10-bit HEVC processing and subtle debanding produce cleaner dark gradients in MP4 exports, while GIF exports keep colors more consistent across frames.
  • Clearer, safer exports: Export now shows the current phase and estimated time remaining, gives more useful retry and failure messages, and saves more reliably to iCloud Drive and other cloud-backed folders. JPEG exports also handle transparency, quality, and scale-aware DPI metadata more consistently.
  • More responsive editing: Screenshot capture and output, project saves, preview scrubbing, GIF export, startup, and recording handoff now do more work away from the main UI path.
  • Motion accessibility and feedback: ScreenTune now respects Reduce Motion across onboarding, previews, inspectors, export, and editor transitions. Timeline snaps and slider detents provide restrained trackpad feedback without repeated taps.
  • Trial and licensing: For new users, the 7-day trial starts when onboarding is completed rather than on first launch, and license activation provides clearer confirmation and localized errors.

Fixed

  • Recording recovery: ScreenTune can recover usable recording segments after a crash or force quit, and automatically stops and saves when disk space becomes critical or capture stops unexpectedly.
  • Recording controls: Recordings now start immediately by default. Start, Pause/Resume, reconnect, Stop, and Quit paths are more reliable, with clearer saved-with-warning feedback when part of a recording may be degraded.

Audio export and recording stability 1.2.3

Improved

  • System-audio MP4 exports: MP4 exports with system audio are more stable near the end, including cases where progress could appear to pause or reset.
  • Recording audio sync: Recorded audio and video timing now stays aligned more consistently after capture.
  • Area selection controls: Area selection bars and recording actions now stay cleaner in tight spaces.

Fixed

  • Area recording countdowns: Fixed a case where area recordings could miss the latest countdown setting before recording starts.

Text selection, cursor motion, and export polish 1.2.0

New

  • Screenshot text selection: Select recognized text inside screenshot edits and copy it without leaving ScreenTune.
  • Number badges: Drop numbered callouts onto screenshots for steps, labels, and quick review notes.

Improved

  • Screenshot preview text copy: Floating screenshot previews now surface text copy only when recognized text is available.
  • Cursor motion control: Cursor smoothing is now adjustable from the Cursor inspector, so recorded pointer movement can stay polished or closer to the raw capture.
  • GIF export guardrails: GIF defaults and estimated-size warnings now steer large exports toward safer quality and resolution choices.
  • Responsiveness: Editor playback, timeline changes, color controls, and capture overlays now do less redundant UI work during interaction.

Fixed

  • Audio-on video exports: MP4 exports with audio handle timing and writer cleanup more reliably.
  • Export access: Export-related license checks now apply consistently to recognized-text copy actions after the trial ends.

Image import, capture, and export improvements 1.1.0

New

  • Image import: Open image files from Finder or use File > Import Image to bring a still image straight into editing.

Improved

  • Better image fit: Imported images now open with a more natural fit in the preview and editor.
  • Less intrusive area capture: Snap assist now keeps freeform area selection easier to control while still showing helpful guidance.
  • Preview stack behavior: Multiple screenshot previews are positioned and handed off more reliably, including copy, save, close, and edit shortcuts on the hovered card.
  • Annotation colors per tool: Color choices are remembered separately for annotation tools, making repeated markup faster.
  • Smoother editing: Background recommendations and preview rendering now do less work on the main thread.
  • More reliable exports: Padded video exports now keep their intended layout and scale more consistently.

Fixed

  • Recording finalization: Recording shutdown now handles writer timeouts and background cancellation more safely.
  • Export and preview cleanup: Background rendering, mosaic updates, and export cancellation now clean up more safely when work is interrupted.

Preview shortcuts and stability fixes 1.0.1

Fixed

  • Reliable shortcuts: Copy, Save, Close, and Edit now respond more consistently while the floating preview card is active.
  • Clear shortcut scope: Preview shortcuts now respond only while the card is hovered or focused, preventing accidental actions after you return to another app.
  • Area capture display selection: When a selected area spans displays, screenshots and recordings now use the display with the largest overlap.

Improved

  • Shorter completion state: Copy and Save now close the floating preview after finishing, so the confirmation state does not linger.
  • Tighter preview card: The card size, action buttons, and close button spacing were adjusted for the smaller floating preview.
  • Lighter preview rendering: Preview and editor redraws were reduced during playback and cursor updates to keep interactions responsive.

New

  • Feedback image attachments: Feedback now supports multiple image attachments with clearer previews, removal controls, help text, and upload limits.
