Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 2026

At ScreenTune, we believe your data is yours. This privacy policy explains how we handle information in the macOS app, on our website, and through our payment and licensing provider.

1. Local Processing

ScreenTune is a native macOS application. Screen recordings, screenshots, audio captures, and video edits are processed entirely on your device. We do not upload, store, or have access to any content you record or edit.

2. System Permissions

ScreenTune requests the following macOS system permissions to function:

  • Screen Recording — required to capture your screen.
  • Accessibility — used for cursor tracking, click detection, text cursor detection, and shortcut reliability.
  • Input Monitoring — used for screenshot preview shortcuts such as copy, save, and close when you enable that workflow.
  • Microphone — optional, used only when you choose to record audio with your screen recordings.

These permissions are managed by macOS and can be revoked at any time in System Settings. No data from these permissions is transmitted externally.

3. App Analytics, Telemetry, and Crash Reports

ScreenTune does not collect product analytics about how you use the app for marketing, profiling, or advertising. The app does not record what you capture, edit, or export.

Release builds of ScreenTune may transmit crash and stability reports to Sentry (*.ingest.sentry.io). This is enabled only when a reporting endpoint has been configured at build time; Debug / development builds and builds without a configured endpoint never transmit anything to Sentry. Transmissions include:

  • Unexpected termination (crash) reports — stack trace at the time of the crash (function names, not source code), macOS version, hardware model, app version.
  • Unresponsive-app reports ("app hangs") — triggered when the main thread is blocked long enough that macOS would show a beach-ball. Same shape as a crash report.
  • Handled diagnostic warnings and errors — privacy-scrubbed reports from recoverable failures, used to identify stability issues before they become crashes.
  • Sampled performance diagnostics — low-rate timing and profiling data for app launch, recording, and export stability work. These reports contain function-level diagnostics, not captured media or project content.
  • Release-health session pings — a short "the app started" / "the app exited cleanly" signal with no user content, used to measure the crash-free percentage of releases.
  • Non-personal diagnostic breadcrumbs about app state (for example: "recording started", "export completed").

Before anything leaves your Mac, the app scrubs recognizable filesystem paths — anything under /Users/, /Volumes/, /private/var/folders/, /var/folders/, /tmp/, ~/, and file:// URLs — and suppresses Sentry's default IP-address, email, and username capture.

If you choose to send feedback from the app, ScreenTune sends the message you type, the selected category, your optional email address, and, when enabled, app details such as app version, macOS version, permission status, and license state to Sentry as a feedback item. Feedback messages are user-provided, so please do not include passwords, license keys, captured content, or other sensitive information in the message.

Crash and stability reports, diagnostics, and feedback submissions are kept only as long as needed for support and defect analysis. Our current intended retention for these records is up to 90 days, subject to the retention controls configured in Sentry.

4. License Activation and Validation

When you purchase ScreenTune, the app communicates with Lemon Squeezy's API (api.lemonsqueezy.com) to activate, periodically validate, and, if requested, deactivate your license. The information transmitted depends on the operation:

  • Activation — your license key and an anonymous device label generated by the app.
  • Validation — your license key and, after activation, the instance identifier assigned by Lemon Squeezy.
  • Deactivation — your license key and the instance identifier for the device you choose to deactivate.

The app stores the sensitive license record locally in the macOS Keychain, including your license key, instance identifier, name, email address, and activation date. The app may also store trial and billing clock data locally so trial status and clock integrity can be evaluated on your device. A non-secret cache of entitlement, update-access metadata, and the anonymous device label may be stored in the app's preferences (UserDefaults) so the app can show purchase and update status; that cache does not include the license key, instance identifier, name, or email address. License data is not transmitted to us or any third party other than Lemon Squeezy for activation, validation, and deactivation purposes.

License validation may occur periodically, including when you launch or use the app, to confirm your license remains active. The app normally avoids repeating this validation more often than approximately every 12 hours.

5. Payments

Payments are processed by Lemon Squeezy, our merchant of record. When you purchase ScreenTune, Lemon Squeezy processes your payment information including name, email address, and billing details for order fulfillment and fraud prevention. We do not collect or store your credit card information.

For details on how Lemon Squeezy handles your data, please refer to their privacy policy.

6. Website Analytics

Our website uses Google Analytics 4, provided by Google LLC, to understand visitor traffic and improve the site. Google Analytics may use cookies and similar client identifiers to distinguish visits and measure aggregate activity.

The information collected may include page views, events such as link clicks or downloads, device and browser information, referring pages, and approximate geography derived from network information. No personal information from the macOS app is shared with the website.

You can limit or block this collection by changing your browser settings to reject or delete cookies, using browser privacy controls or extensions, or using Google's browser add-on for opting out of Google Analytics where available.
